In exactly a year, the most important event since World War II. will take place in Europe—the start of the single European currency(货币).

Their aim has been to replace the confusing and wasteful system of national currencies with a single, united economy. Now this process(过程) is entering its last period. Three years later, in 2002, their national currencies will be replaced by a single, EU-wide currency, the “Euro”.
The single currency has taken a long time to arrive. It was first considered over ten years ago, when the EU set up the single market. Big Bird Lives Only in Zoos
A vulture(秃鹫) is in need of help. Can it be saved?
A big bird is in danger. The bird is the California condor(神鹰), a vulture. A vulture is a large bird that eats the dead animals it finds.
The condor is nearly as big and fast as a small airplane. But you may never see it in the sky. Not enough young birds are hatching to take the place of the old birds that die. When an animal dies out completely, or disappears from the earth, it is extinct.
The condor is in danger of extinction for many reasons. People have built cities where the condors used to live. The condors are having trouble finding food. The birds sometimes get sick. When they do, they cannot hatch young birds.
Some people would like to help the condor. They have captured the 26 condors still on Earth. The condors were taken to two zoos in California. In the zoos, they can live safely and hatch young birds. When there are 200 condors they will be moved to a safe new home in the mountains.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp
Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit—and that can be a very annoying thing. 36    Read on for some techniques worth trying.
1. 37
People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease (早老性痴呆症), according to a recent study.   38 Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.
2. Go for a walk.
Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain.   39
3. Learn something new.
Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation (刺激) limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time.   40    Or go dancing with your friends.
A. Focus on the future.
B. This can be espocially harmful to the aged.
C. It should be something like learning gardening.
D. So take a few minutes each day to do some reading.
E. But don't worry if your schedule isn't filled with life-changing events.
F. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments.
G. In other words, when you take care of your body, you take care of your brain.

24. D。 根据第2段最后一句…their national currencies will be replaced by a single, EU-wide currency, the “Euro”可知道答案为D。
25. C。 The single currency has taken a long time to arrive. It was first considered over ten years ago, when the EU set up the single market。
从第1段the island of Great Britain is connected to Continental Europe for the first time since the Ice Age 可以看出the island of Great Britain和France是由the tunnel连接起来的。
33. C。 第2段第2句话The Queen was accompanied(陪同) on her train journey through the historic tunnel by one of her Rolls-Royce cars which was placed on the train 已明确告知Queen Elizabeth是怎么去参加开幕典礼的。
Read on for some techniques worth trying. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward. Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. 选E小题39:考查句意理解和上下文:由上文Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time.
