高一英语试卷 第3页(共10页)

There is a popular saying in the English language: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, that is not true. Unkind words, name-calling or even the so-called “the silent treatment” can hurt children as much as being physically hit, sometimes even more so.
A recent study of middle school children showed that verbal(言语的)abuse by other children can harm development in the brain. The study was a project of researchers at Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts. Researcher Martin Teicher and his team studied young adults, aged 18 to 25. These young men and women h ad not ever been treated in a cruel or violent way by their parents. The researchers asked the young people to rate their childhood exposure to verbal abuse from both parents and other children. Then the researchers performed imaging tests on the brains of the subjects.
The images showed that the people who reported suffering verbal abuse from peers in middle school had underdeveloped connections between the left and right side of the brain. The two sides of the brain are connected by a large bundle of connecting fibers called the corpus callosum(胼胝体,胼胝体,脑胼胝体that was underdeveloped.
The middle school years are a time when these brain connections are developing. So, unkind, hurtful comments from children or adults during this period have the greatest effect. The researchers tested the mental and emotional condition of all the young people in the study. The tests showed that this same group of people had higher levels of fear, depression, anger and drug abuse than others in the study.
The researchers published their findings online o the American Journal of Psychiatry’s website.
Parents cannot control what other people say to their children, but they can prepare their children.

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says schools were once safe places for children. Now, he says, they are increasingly becoming instruments of war. In the past five years, there were more than 10,000 attacks on schools.

As warming continues, scientists warn the oxygen content of oceans across the planet could be more and more reduced, with serious consequences for the future of fish and other sea life.
36 One is the simple fact that as water gets warmer, it can hold less dissolved(溶解的) oxygen. The other reason is less obvious. The entire ocean gets its oxygen from the surface—either from the atmosphere, or from photosynthesizing algae(进行光合作用的藻类) floating at the top of the sea. 37
Global warming is expected to reduce the mixing of the ocean by making surface seawater lighter. That’s because in a warmer world we can expect more rainfall and more melting(融化)of glaciers, icebergs, and ice sheets. 38 The extra heat from the warming atmosphere will also make surface water expand and thus make it lighter still. 39 Instead, more of the oxygen will remain near the surface, where it will be used up by oxygen-breathing organisms.
A low-oxygen ocean may become an inescapable feature of our planet. A team of Danish researchers wondered how long oxygen levels would drop if we could somehow reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 2100. They determined that over the next few thousand years oxygen levels would continue to fall, until they declined by 30 percent. The oxygen would slowly return to the oceans, but even 100, 000 years from now they will not have fully recovered. 40

It’s not known why the oxygen level of oceans has reduced.
Scientists point to two reasons to expect a drop in ocean oxygen.
Fresh water’s inpouring will make the water at the ocean’s surface lighter.
The oxygen then spreads to the deep ocean as the surface water slowly sinks.
Global warming has caused the reduction of the oxygen content of oceans worldwide.
The light surface water will be less likely to sink so the deep ocean will get less oxygen.
If they are right, we have every reason to worry about the major effect it has on sea life.
