I experienced more than I was able to handle as a boy. My father was an alcoholic, which resulted in an absolute mess in our family including physical abuse in my parents’ marriage. I was five years old when my parents divorced. My mother worked day and night to support the family. This left me with a lot of time by myself. I never received any encouragement to try out for sports or after-school activities. Because of this, I never really thought that I could do it. I thought that without a parent’s company, support and encouragement it was hard for a teen to set up structure for themselves. Had I experienced the love from both of my parents, I would have been able to learn how to make real friends and how to build confidence, teamwork and good decision-making skills.
But that was not my reality. Reality was that I fell in with the wrong crowd. I made some bad friends. As I met more people who partied, took drugs and alcohol, I began to follow them. Before I knew it, all I cared about was how I was going to get high.
My mom was angry and let me know how much I was letting her down but I didn’t know how to stop and I couldn’t picture my life without the drugs. I protected my using drugs at any cost. I was angry at her because it seemed as if I was not important to her. The one thing about my mom was that she did not give up. I not only needed treatment to fight my addiction, but needed help to remove what I had been carrying around for years. Professionals were able to help us heal together. They were able to help my mom learn how to push me when I needed drugs, and communicate with an angry teenager.
We didn’t take the route that most mothers and sons take in life, but we are proof that addiction doesn’t have to tear a family apart forever.
24. What can be learned about the author’s parents?
	A. His mother encouraged him to do sports.
	B. His mother didn’t know how to raise him alone.
	C. His father drank a lot for failure in his business.
	D. His father was to blame for his parents’ divorce.
25. How was the author affected by his parents’ divorce?
	A. He failed to make any friends.
B. He felt hopeless about his future.
	C. He was discouraged to try any sport.
D. He couldn’t get any support from others.
26. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
	A. He succeeded in getting rid of drugs.
B. He showed trust in the professionals.
	C. He often communicated with his mother.
	D. He didn’t care about letting her mother down.
27. What does the text mainly talk about?
	A. Drugs for a teen’s growth.
B. The importance of love for a teen.
	C. A trip inside the mind of an addicted teen.
D. The influence of parents’ divorce on a teen.

C
Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children’s curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, I said, “Now that we’re finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?” This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and creative answers. Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting”, or coming up with more questions or ideas. Never push a child to “Think”. It doesn’t make sense. Children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What’s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target for your disagreement.
Lastly, show; don’t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass (放大镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Instead of saying that water evaporates (蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.
28. To raise children’s interest, the most important thing for adults to do is __________.
   A. to share the children’s curiosity
B. to let them see the world around
   C. to explain different terms about science
D. to supply the children with lab equipment
29. Children can answer questions in a more logical, complete, and creative way if adults __________.
   A. ask them to answer at once
B. tell them to answer the next day
   C. encourage them to take questions seriously
D. wait at least for three seconds after a question
30. What should adults do to encourage children in a science discussion?
   A. Perform good behavior. B. Ask more questions.
   C. Make the discussion interesting. D. Give a quick praise.
31. The author mentions all of the following techniques except that adults should __________.
   A. encourage children to ask questions of their own
   B. tell their children stories instead of reciting facts
   C. offer their children chances to see things for themselves
D. be patient enough when their children answer questions

English is an excellent language to learn, whether it’s for business, travel or personal reasons. Here are some important ways to improve your spoken English.
When you have time to speak, just try your best to practice. Don’t wait until you “feel more comfortable” speaking in English, so start speaking English today. You’ll be surprised at how quickly our language skills improve. Find a native English speaker who is willing to spend some time speaking English with you—you may be able to offer them a language exchange, where they spend 30 minutes speaking English with you and you spend 30 minutes speaking your native language with them.
Even if you have a good knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary, native English speakers may find it’s very difficult to understand you if you don’t work on your pronunciation. Correct, clear pronunciation is necessary if you really want to improve your English. Listen closely to how native English speakers pronounce certain words and sounds and do your best to copy them.
The wider your vocabulary and the more English phrases you learn, the easier speaking English will become. Once you have learned a new word or phrase, you should make an effort to use it in a sentence—this is the best way to memorize it. You should also start a notebook of phrases that English speakers use all the time.
Another great way to add some more English conversation into your weekly practice is to sign up for a class of discussion group. Attending an English class is a great way to pay attention to some of the more formal aspects of speaking English. A class will teach you the correct way of speaking. Attending a discussion group is a more informal and relaxed way of learning English, where the emphasis is more on communication and relationship building than on speaking “correct” English.
32. What may be the best title of the text?
   A. Benefits of speaking fluent English.
   B. How to learn English grammar clearly.
   C. English, an excellent language to learn.
   D. Ways of improving your spoken English.
33. The writer suggested people start practicing when .
   A. they have any time B. they have memorized a lot of words
   C. they feel comfortable D. their language skills have been improved
34. What is the best way to improve the pronunciation?
   A. Just remember the grammar and vocabulary.
   B. Speak English when you “feel comfortable”.
   C. Make sure how words are read and copy them.
   D. Try hard to remember the pronunciations of words.
35. What is the structure of the text?
