The months are familiar to everyone. Nearly any small child can rattle off the twelve months of the year. But how and why did the names come into being?
Every month’s name tells a story. January is named after Janus, a Roman god described as having two faces, one looking forward and one looking back. As the god of doors, he had to watch out for friends and enemies coming from either direction.
February is a form of februare, which was a Roman festival. On that day, people begged the gods for healthy children and enough crops in the next year.
March is named after Mars, whom many people have read about as the god of wars. Few people realize that at first Mars was the god of springtime. Fighters would “take the winter off” from fighting, resting while the weather was too bad for the battle. In the spring-around what we now think of as March battles would start again. From this time line, Mars soon became more well known as the god of wars than of springtime.
April is a mystery. Experts argue a lot about the origin of it.
May is also named after a goddess, Maika. She was the goddess of plants, because plants often begin to have flowers in May.
Not every month kept the same name over the years. The first name for July was Quintilis, “the fifth month”. August was at first called Sextilis, “the sixth month”. Likewise, September, October, November, and December were the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth months. How did July and August get their new names? July was named after Julius Caesar, the first emperor of Rome, after he was killed in 66 BC. August was named after Augustus Caesar, Julius Caesar’s nephew.

Since his students began using Quizlet, English teacher Tristan Thorne has noticed an improvement in their ability to learn and use new words. Quizlet is a learning App, a computer program you use on your mobile phone. It can help users build and test their knowledge of English words. Quizlet has word sets for millions of subjects. And, it is quickly becoming a useful mobile tool for language learners.
Thorne teachers at Columbia University in New York City. Thanks to learning Apps, Jeff Strack, another English teacher, has also noticed improvement in his students’ ability to remember information. He teaches at Hostos Community College, also in New York. He and Thorne are part of a growing number of language educators adding mobile Apps to their classes.
Strack and Thorne seem to agree that the days when teachers would not permit the use of mobile phones are gone. When they use Apps, language learners communicate more differently than in a traditional classroom. Users act on or respond to something, instead of just listening to new information.
Thorne believes that Apps can help learners become more active in learning. For example, each week, his students are required to add vocabulary words into Quizlet for others to use. He says some Apps also make it easy for students to know their language strengths and weaknesses.
The biggest improvement Strack has seen in his students is that they are much more active in whole-class or small-group discussions. “Apps let all students take part in the activity, whether it’s a game, quiz or practice activity.” he says.
Many existing learning Apps are designed for students of all ages and levels. Some are designed for group activities. some support independent learning. Still some are good for homework. Thorne says he especially likes Quizlet and three other Apps: QR Codes, Socrative and Evernote.
32. What do Strack and Thorne do to improve their teaching?
   A. They design learning Apps for their students.
   B. They don’t allow their students to use Apps after class
   C. They allow their students to use mobile Apps to study
   D. They order their students not to use mobile phones in class
33. According to the text, Apps can help language learners __________.
   A. take an active part in learning
   B. save much time and money
   C. remember their weaknesses
   D. improve personal designing skills
34. What can we learn about the existing learning Apps?
   A. They have three types in total
   B. They are too few to choose from
   C. They are only designed for homework
   D. They are designed for different uses
35. What can be the best title for the text?
   A. Great changes in science and technology
   B. The use of mobile phones will be gone
   C. Ways to choose from different mobile Apps

【参考范文】
Dear Worried,
I have received your letter and I’m glad to give you some suggestions.
First of all, don’t be disappointed. Many students find it difficult to write well. In my opinion, if you want to improve your writing, you can do several things.
To begin with, do some study with set phrases and sentence structures. Keep a list of them and make some sentences with them. And, in order to write well, you must learn to read much, which will contribute to building your vocabulary and help to better your writing skills. Besides, you’d better recite some good passages, where you can enjoy many beautiful sentences and learn some useful expressions. What’s more, keeping a diary is an effective way. You can have a try without delay and it’s necessary to practise writing as often as possible.
Follow your dream and you’ll find success is just around the corner!
Good luck to you in your writing.
Yours,
Helpful
