Jason
What I like best is seeing Arsenal win and playing football. If I am feeling sad I will play a football game on my Play Station 2. The best day I have ever had was when I finished first in the 800-metre race at my secondary school. It was a school record, although I didn’t know that at the time. My family makes me happy, too.
Antonio
My little sister makes me sad because she always tells tales on me to my mum. If I am having a bad day, food cheers me up. I like chili con carne and sweet chili crisps. It makes me happy because I want to be big and have lots of energy.
Usman
I haven’t done anything very exciting in my life but one of my best achievements is that I got a good report from my school this year. People on TV make me laugh, particularly Eddie Murphy. I am good at making other people happy. I just talk and my friends start laughing — they think I am silly.
Ashleigh
If I’m having a bad day, knowing that someone is there for me can make me happy. I wouldn’t say I’m the best at making other people happy, but I know that just being a good friend to other people is important. The things I like doing are singing, dancing, hanging out with my friends and just being lively and funny.
Kinzey
The most exciting thing I have ever done in my life was when I went abseiling in Wales. But that was a one-off. The things I do all the time are playing football, watching movies and going places with my friends. I know it sounds bad, but what I find funny is when people hurt themselves.

When Peng Liyuan stepped off the plane in Moscow, the whole world wanted to know who dressed the elegant first lady. The reporter released the secret—Ma Ke.
Peng Liyuan has been wearing Ma Ke's designs for more than a decade, a fact that was only highlighted recently when she was on her first state visit, accompanying her husband President Xi Jinping. The elegant and attractive Peng has been compared with the US' first lady Michelle Obama, since stepping off the airplane in Moscow on March 22. Suddenly, everyone was curious to know more about the first lady's wardrobe.
Even so, Ma prefers a low-key approach. "If you eat a tasty egg why would you want to see the hen?"she says of all the media attention.
Ma's relationship with Peng began 10 years ago after a concert in Guangzhou when a reporter told Peng she knew the designer behind the label Exception de Mixmind. Peng asked for an introduction because she was a fan of Ma's designs and had been wearing them for years.
The two naturally became friends. Ma says, "The painting reflects the painter, and clothes reflect both the designer and the wearer. Someone desires fame and wealth, or love and sympathy; what you have in your heart is reflected in the design. Those who don't share my philosophy won't buy my clothes. Peng is a caring person, devoted to charity and environmental protection, which is exactly what I'm doing now."
However, regardless of the brand, Peng's support of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands.
"Instead she presented a vision of Chinese fashion, desiring to bring Chinese designers to the world stage,"says a western designer.
The first lady's double-breasted coat and her black leather handbag aren't available at any of Exception's shops, though Exception's physical stores do have seen a rising number of visitors.

24. In the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 Ma Ke mentioned "an egg and the hen"to show ______.
A. the outcome was more important than the process
B. her dissatisfaction with the media attention on her dress
C. it is hard to explain "which came first, the egg or the hen?"
D. paying such great attention to her was unnecessary
25. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Ma Ke offered to design the first lady's clothes through her friends.
B. Peng had liked Ma's designs long before she got to know her in the flesh.
C. First ladies compete with each other whenever they are together.
D. Peng's suits can be bought in Ma Ke's clothes stores.
26. In the passage, Peng Liyuan ______.
A. always desires the exceptional charm of the brand
B. is knowledgeable in philosophy
C. often reflects on what she has in her heart before choosing clothes
D. has sympathy and a strong environmental consciousness
27. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The same black leather handbags as Peng's are sold in bag stores in big cities.
B. After Peng Liyuan's visit to Moscow Ma Ke's clothes became more popular.
C. Peng wears the dress designed by a Chinese designer probably to support Chinese brands.
D. Many citizens found Peng Liyuan's choice quite unexpected.

The latest research suggests that the key factor separating geniuses from ordinary people is not I.Q.. Instead, it’s purposeful practice.
Top performers spend more hours practising their craft. It you wanted to picture how a typical genius might develop, you’d take a girl who possessed a slightly above average language ability. It wouldn’t have to be a big talent, just enough so that she might gain some sense of distinction. Then you would want her to meet, say, a novelist, who coincidentally shared some similar qualities. Maybe the writer was from the same town or had the same family background. This contact would give the girl a vision of her future self and a fascinating circle who might some day join. It would also help if one of her parents died when she was 12, giving her a strong sense of insecurity and fuelling a desperate need for success.
With this ambition, she would read novels and life stories of writers without end. This would give her a primary knowledge of her field. She’d be able to see new writing in deeper ways and quickly understand its inner workings. Then she would practise writing. Her practice would be slow, painstaking and error-focused. By practising in this way, she delays the automatizing process. Her mind wants to turn conscious, newly learned skills into unconscious automatically performed skills. Then she would find an adviser who would correct the smallest errors and push her to take tougher challenges.
By now the primary quality she possesses is not some mysterious genius but the ability to develop a purposeful practice routine; the latest research takes some of the magic out of great achievement. But it underlines a fact that is often neglected. Public discussion is affected by genetics and what we’re “hard-wired” to do. And it’s true that genes play a role in our capabilities. But we construct ourselves through behavior.

28. The passage mainly deals with            .
A.the function of I.Q. in cultivating a writer
B.the relationship between genius and success
C.the decisive factor in making a genius
D.the way of gaining some sense of distinction
						29. By reading novels and writers’ stories, the girl could           .
A.come to understand the inner structure of writing
B.join a fascinating circle of writers some day
C.share with a novelist her likes and dislikes
D.learn from the living examples to establish a sense of security
30. In the girl’s long painstaking training process, ________.
A.her adviser forms a primary challenging force to her success.
B.her writing turns into an automatic pattern of performance
C.she acquires the magic of some great achievement
D.she comes to realize she is “hard-wired” to write
								31. What can be concluded from the passage?
A.A fuelling ambition plays a leading role in one’s success.
B.A responsible adviser is more important than the knowledge of writing.
C.As to the growth of a genius, effort is as important as I.Q.
D.What really matters is what you do rather than who you are.

D
For generations, students were taught to stretch before playing games. Then the practice fell out of favor. Studies seemed to show that such stretching temporarily reduces muscular power, weakens athletic performance and increases the risk of injury. So a majority of fitness experts currently advise against stretches before exercise. But now a new research indicates that they might not be such a bad idea after all.
This month, the journal, Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism(APNM), published a study by four distinguished exercise scientists who analyzed more than 200 studies of how stretching affects the following exercise. In broad terms, they found that stretching can briefly prevent the ability to generate power. So if you reach for your toes and hold that position, tightening your hamstrings(腿筋), you might not then be able to leap as high or start a dash as forcefully as you don't stretch.
Those undesirable effects were generally found, however, only if each stretch was held for more than 60 seconds and the subject then immediately became fully active, with no further warm-up. "Most people are unlikely to hold a warm-up stretch for longer than about 30 seconds." Dr. McHugh, the co-author of the study says. The review found few lasting negative impacts from these short stretches, especially if the volunteers followed that stretching with several minutes of jogging or other basic warm-up movements. In fact, these short stretches turned out to have a positive effect.
Do these findings mean that all the athletes should stretch in advance before a match? "Not necessarily," Dr. McHugh says, "Runners and cyclists don't have much risk for acute muscle injuries." They can warm up by jogging or pedaling lightly. But he suggests that people who play basketball and other ball sports should stretch in advance. Those who haven't stretched since childhood gym class might want to consider consulting an athletic trainer about the best upper and lower body stretches.

32. Which of the following statements agrees with most fitness experts?
A. Before playing a game you should stretch your legs and arms.
B. After attending a match you should stretch your legs and arms.
C. It's harmful to stretch your legs and arms before playing games.
D. It doesn't matter whether you stretch or not before playing games.
33. According to the new research, people may suffer negative impacts when________.
A. they do stretches after attending a game
B. they reach for toes and hold that position
C. following a stretch with several minutes' jogging
D. dashing immediately after one 60-second plus stretch
34. We can learn from the passage that________.
A. all athletes should not stretch in advance
B. the four scientists published the journal APNM
C. it's unnecessary for a tennis player to do warm-up stretches
D. players ought to have done warm-up stretches since childhood
35. What's Dr. McHugh's attitude toward stretches?
A. Concerned. B. Suspicious. C. Indifferent. D. Objective.

There are times when people come into your life, and you know at once that they are sure to be there. They serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be: your classmate, neighbor, teacher, long-lost friend or even a real stranger. But 36 , you know that at that very moment they will affect your life in some serious way.
37 . However, in reflection you realize that without getting over them you would have never realized your potential ability and strength.
Everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck.           38 . Without these small tests, life would be like a smooth road to nowhere. The people affecting your life, and the successes and failures you experience, help to create who you are and who you become.
Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most important ones. If someone hurts you, forgive them, 39 .
40 , for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people you have never talked to before, and really listen. You should set your sights high, hold your head up, tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself. Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets.
Most importantly, if you love someone, tell him or her, for you never know what tomorrow may have in store.

Illness, injury, love all occur to test the limits of your soul
Don’t forget to embrace those unpleasant moments
Make every day count and appreciate every moment
Sometimes things happening to you may seem challenging at first
because you are likely to get addicted to them
when you lock eyes with them
for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious
