Pieter has a reasonable excuse for his lost wedding ring: a crocodile(鳄鱼)ate it, along with part of his left arm. “It took my wedding ring. I think it ate the ring up.” He told a newspaper by telephone from his hospital as he recalled his struggle with a man-eating animal.
“I took my horse for an evening swim in one of the farm dams. There are lots of crocodiles and hippos (河马)in the area and they move around all the time, from dam to dam and into the river and out again. I was on the lookout for hippos and didn't see any. It slipped my mind that there might be crocodiles,” he said.
He was standing in the water about 5 meters away from the shore when he felt a biting jolt (摇晃)in his left hip. He thought it was a hippo but quickly realized it was a crocodile.
“I started to fight immediately. I hit the crocodile with my left arm and then it went for my left forearm. It pulled me under the water for a few seconds. I realized if I didn't stand up my wife would never find me again. What I didn't realize at the time was that the crocodile let me go because it had taken part of my left arm off,” said Pieter.
With his right arm, Pieter then grabbed the rope of his horse, which took him to safety. He walked 200 meters to his house and his wife took him to the nearest hospital.
“I’m lucky I didn't lose too much blood. The biggest problem with a crocodile bite is that it can be septic (受感染的). Crocodiles never brush their teeth.” said Pieter.
25. Which of the following best describes Pieter when he fought with the crocodile?
A. Regretful. B. Frightened. C. Clear-headed. D. Thoughtful.
26. Pieter came across a crocodile when he ______.
A. was looking for hippos                                   B. was swimming in the dam
C. was looking out for danger                             D. was struggling in the water
27. Why did the crocodile leave Pieter?
A. It had taken his wedding ring.                        B. It had been badly hurt.
C. It had found many hippos.                           D. It had got part of his left arm.

Cold weather can hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.
Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.
If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.
28. What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?
	A. They are often forgotten by their owners.
	B. They are used to living outdoors.
	C. They build their own shelter.
	D. They like to stay in warm places.
29. Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?
	A. To know when to bring them inside.
	B. To keep them from eating bad food.
	C. To help them find shelters.
	D. To keep them company.
30. If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may ___.
	A. run short of clean water	B. dig deep holes for fun
	C. dirty the snow nearby	D. get lost in the wild
31. What is the purpose of this text?
	A. To solve a problem.	B. To give practical advice.
	C. To tell an interesting story.	D. To present a research result.

D
It seems hard to watch someone yawn(打哈欠)and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force.
Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a sign of pity and a form of social connection. Kids don’t develop this deeply rooted behavior until around age four, the study found. Kids with autism (自闭症) are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect.
“Emotional infection seems to be a born thing that connects us together,” said Molly Helt, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Connecticut. “Yawning may be part of that.” Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did.
“The fact that autistic kids don’t do it might mean they’re really missing out on that emotional connection with people around them, ” she said. “The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand that humans have minds that are different from others’," she added. "Autistic people never seem to understand that.”
Like infectious(有感染力的)laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that promotes social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group.
32.According to the first two paragraphs, what does the new study suggest?
A.Yawning is a form of communication.
B.It is easy to stop yawning when you see others yawn.
C.Children follow others in yawning just after they are born.
D.Yawning has some mysterious force which is related to God.
33.According to Molly Helt, __________.
A.humans differ from animals because they communicate with others
B.yawning is a kind of emotional connection among humans
C.emotions are infectious, but yawning is not
D.yawning helps clear ears on planes
34.Which of the following is NOT true about yawning?
A.It is natural to yawn back if people around you yawn.
B.Some kids are too young to yawn after others.
C.Yawning can be used to test children’s development.
D.Kids with autism yawn easily when others yawn.
35.The author implies in the last paragraph that __________.
A.yawning can make people feel relaxed
B.it is bad manners to yawn on some social occasions
C.the more you yawn, the happier you will be
D.yawning is different from infectious laughter and crying in theory
